Square Footage Calculator

Measure the rectangular area's length and width in feet, then multiply them. For irregular spaces, split the area into rectangles, calculate each one, and add the results.

Square footage measures area, not linear length. A 12-foot by 10-foot room has 120 square feet of floor area.

Oliver measures a rectangular room as 15 feet long and 12 feet wide. Its floor area is 15 × 12 = 180 square feet, equivalent to 20 square yards.

For an L-shaped room, split it into non-overlapping rectangles and add their areas. Add a separate allowance for cuts and waste when ordering materials.

For a rectangle, multiply length in feet by width in feet. A 12-foot by 15-foot room has 180 square feet of floor area.

Measure both dimensions using the same unit before multiplying. If dimensions are in inches, convert them to feet first or use an area method that keeps the units consistent through the calculation.

An L-shaped or otherwise irregular floor can often be divided into smaller rectangles. Calculate the area of each rectangle and add the pieces together.

Do not include overlapping sections twice. For curved or highly irregular shapes, a dedicated area formula or measured plan may be more appropriate.

Flooring, tile, roofing, and other materials can require extra quantity for cuts, pattern matching, breakage, defects, and future repairs. The measured area is the starting point, not automatically the purchase quantity.

Apply a project-specific waste allowance separately rather than silently adding one to the square-footage result.
