Salary-to-hourly formula

Calculation formulaSalary-to-hourly formula
Used for the result above
Hourly equivalent = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).

The result is a gross-pay comparison. It does not assign a cash value to benefits, paid leave, bonuses, overtime eligibility, or differences in job stability.

Example: Alex converts a $62,400 salary

Alex earns $62,400 annually and works 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. That is 2,080 hours per year. Dividing $62,400 by 2,080 gives an hourly equivalent of $30.

The monthly gross equivalent is $5,200. These are pay comparisons before tax and deductions; they do not place a value on benefits or establish an overtime rate.

What the hourly equivalent tells you

The hourly equivalent divides annual salary by the number of paid work hours assumed for the year. It gives salaried and hourly compensation a common unit for rough comparison.

It does not automatically represent an employee's legal regular rate for overtime purposes, and it does not include the value of benefits, bonuses, paid leave, or employer contributions.

Why weekly hours matter so much

The same annual salary produces a lower hourly equivalent when it is spread across more working hours. A $60,000 salary at 40 hours per week is not the same hourly-equivalent workload as $60,000 at 50 hours per week.

Use the weekly-hours input to reflect the schedule you actually expect. If hours vary, a realistic long-run average is more useful than the nominal schedule printed in a job description.

Gross hourly equivalent vs. take-home pay

This conversion is based on gross salary before payroll taxes and deductions. If you need to estimate net pay, use the paycheck calculator after converting or enter the annual salary directly there.

Assumptions and limitations

What the estimate assumes

No taxes, benefits, bonuses, commissions, or overtime rules are included.

Salary to Hourly Calculator FAQs

How many weeks should I use?

Use 52 if the annual salary covers the full year. Use fewer weeks only when you intentionally want to model a shorter working year.

Does paid vacation reduce the hourly equivalent?

Not when the annual salary continues through paid vacation. The simple comparison here uses the hours and weeks you choose.

Is this take-home hourly pay?

No. It is a gross-pay equivalent before taxes and deductions.

Does this include overtime?

No. Overtime eligibility and rates depend on employment rules and are separate from this simple salary conversion.

How do I convert a yearly salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the paid work hours in a year. For a 40-hour schedule across 52 paid weeks, that denominator is 2,080 hours.

Does salary to hourly include paid vacation?

Only through the weeks and hours assumptions you enter. If time off is paid as part of salary, you may still use 52 paid weeks for an annual-equivalent comparison.

Gross-pay comparison only. Taxes, benefits, bonuses, paid leave, and overtime treatment are not included.
