Average Calculator

The arithmetic mean is sensitive to unusually high or low values. When a data set is skewed, the median can describe the center differently.

Ethan records scores of 10, 20, and 30. Their sum is 60 and there are three values, so the arithmetic mean is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

A zero is included as a value; a blank entry is not. If the scores carry different weights, calculate a weighted average separately rather than giving every score equal importance.

The arithmetic mean adds all values and divides by the number of values. It gives each observation equal weight, which makes it appropriate for many everyday sets of comparable numbers.

If some observations should count more than others, a weighted average is a different calculation and should not be reproduced by simply repeating or rounding values without a clear weighting rule.

A very high or very low value can pull the arithmetic mean toward the extreme. The median, by contrast, is the middle value after sorting and can be less sensitive to outliers.

Use the mean when the arithmetic center is what you need. For skewed data such as home prices or incomes, consider whether the median or a distribution view would answer the question better.
